La Porte City residents have until November 14 to weigh in on the state permit that governs treated wastewater discharged into Wolf Creek.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is proposing to reissue the city treatment plant’s wastewater discharge permit. The proposal is open for public comment; the permit is still a draft.

The October 15 public notice identifies the facility off Eighth Street north of town as an activated-sludge wastewater treatment plant. Its receiving stream is Wolf Creek.

People can submit written comments or objections to DNR permit writer Nick Kirkendall at nick.kirkendall@dnr.iowa.gov. Anyone requesting a public hearing must give specific reasons for holding one. The DNR says it will consider comments in making its final determination.

The draft permit, public notice and supporting explanation are available at https://programs.iowadnr.gov/wwpie/Admin/PermitDetails?permitID=10443 under permit 0743001. Kirkendall can also be reached at 515-823-9791 to request information.
