Hawkeye-led grant aims to expand short-term workforce training

Hawkeye Community College will lead a statewide effort to expand short-term job training supported by a $10.8 million U.S. Department of Labor grant, the college announced Sept. 28.
The Iowa STRONG consortium aims to prepare more than 50 training programs for Workforce Pell eligibility by 2030. Hawkeye identified HVAC, pharmacy technician, commercial driver’s license, construction and CNC machining programs as pathways it will align with eligibility requirements.
For prospective students in the Cedar Valley, the development could broaden options for training that takes less time than a traditional degree. The announcement does not establish that these programs already qualify for Pell assistance or that students can enroll with that aid today.
Eligibility, program approval, application dates and costs still need to be confirmed before students make enrollment decisions. The grant supports development of the statewide training system; it should not be read as a promise of free tuition or a guaranteed award to an individual student.
